1. Carefully monitor the condition
of the patient's skin during the procedure. This is the most important
factor to achieving a safe, effective peel.
2. Begin at 20%. The exposure time
depends on the skin's responsiveness to the acid. When the first
signs of redness appear and/ or patient discomfort occurs, the
peel should be terminated. The patient can communicate to you
their discomfort level on a range from 1 to 10 with 1 being low
and 10 being high. The first peel usually lasts for 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Observe the outcome of the peel.
Ask the patient to monitor the effects of the peel on the skin
during the post-peel healing time.
4. For all subsequent peels, discuss
the outcome of the previous peel.
- If a good response was observed
such as slight redness, light peeling, minimal discomfort and
complete healing in 3 to 5 days, then the patient will most
likely be able to tolerate a peel with the previous concentration
and time. Based on the response of the skin, the length of exposure
or concentration may be increased.
- If no response was observed, then
the patient may be able to tolerate an increased time of exposure
or concentration compared to the previous peel. Proceed with
caution.
- If a poor response was observed
such as, extreme redness, heavy peeling, blistering, scabbing
and long healing times, the patient should be peeled less rigorously
after complete healing has occurred.
5. Continue with particular concentration
until the skin can safely tolerate application for 5 minutes.
Then, during the next peel either continue with the same concentration
for a longer period of time or move to the next higher concentration
with a shorter exposure time. The High Potency Peel was designed
to be used on patients who have demonstrated tolerance to the
NeoStrata® 70% glycolic acid Skin Renewal peels and require
a greater clinical effect.
